This Rosary was made to honor St. Maria Goretti. The earth toned and simple beads represent her life that she lived with little money, working on her farm with her siblings and her mother. The Our Father beads are white to represent her desire for purity that led to her death. The gold beads represent her “heart of gold” that she showed to the man who stabbed her and tried to rape her, saying that she forgave him the day after the incident
Maria’s father died when she was young and her mother then struggled to feed her children and make ends meet. Although the circumstances were tough, her family was very close and they loved God. Her family worked together on their farm, and one day while she was working, her brother or neighbor, Alessandro, tried to attack and rape her. She cried out that it was a mortal sin and tried to escape. Enraged, Alessandro stabbed her almost 15 times. Her sister found her bleeding and she was taken to the hospital. Maria underwent surgery but she ended up dying in the hospital. Before she passed, she said that she forgave Alessandro. Alessandro went to jail for 30 years, but then asked forgiveness from Maria’s mother – whom also forgave him. He then became a lay brother at the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin where he worked as a Gardener and Receptionist until he died.
St. Maria Goretti is the Patron of youth, young women, purity, and victims of rape. Her feast day is on July 6th.
